The first draft of the human genome, Ari Patrinos

Interviewee: Ari Patrinos. The first draft of the human genome.

There was a lot of attention paid to the fact that somehow there wasn't a race, and that we are jointly celebrating it, but the most important thing is what was it that we were celebrating, that we actually had for the first time the draft of the human genome sequence. And for the first time we could have a bird's-eye view of the whole landscape and we could already start seeing some very, very interesting things. You know, that even though we were in the very early stage we couldn't, we couldn't help but start looking at the data themselves and seeing some patterns emerge about this landscape of the human genome, and you know, the number of genes that were suspected. I mean all these issues were, you know, tantalizing and fascinating.
