Adults and students ages 10 and up; under 15 years chaperone required.
Join us to learn how to "paint" with bacteria and create your own unique work of art!
Traditional laboratory techniques utilized by scientists to study the world on both a macroscopic and microscopic scale can also be used to create unique works of art. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn multiple techniques to create unique imageries by “painting” with harmless microbes that express colorful proteins as pigments.
In this session, participants will:
- create Agar Art using genetically engineered bacteria; and
- gain an appreciation for the components of “BioArt” from both scientific and artistic perspectives.

Ages 10–13, one adult chaperone required
Join us to learn how science, art, and storytelling are coming to the rescue of a raging climate!
The Climate is Raging: Science, art, and storytelling are coming to the rescue!
Scientists all over the world are genetically modifying plants to help them adapt to climate change. Some of the best are right down the road at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). During this two-hour program, you'll meet two scientists and see some CRISPR-edited plants they grow at CSHL. You will also meet the artist behind “Decoding Plant Genomes,” a book about the amazing research by CSHL plant biologists who modify crops to withstand the raging climate.
In this session, participants will:
- learn why scientists are modifying plants with CRISPR;
- see and talk about some CRISPR plants from the CSHL greenhouse;
- purple tomatoes and chocolate-flavored fruit in space! Imagine a superpower for your favorite fruit or vegetable; and
- draw and write about your super-powered plant for a science and art story using the artist’s “SciArt Workbook."
Ages 10-13, with one adult chaperone required. Chaperones must purchase a ticket and fully participate in all program activities.

Did anyone believe her? Join us and uncover answers to The Mystery of Anastasia!
In this session, participants will:
- perform a computer-based lab;
- use forensic techniques to investigate evidence; and
- compare DNA sequences to determine the mystery woman’s identity.
