Photo of Carrie Buck and her mother, Paul Lombardo

Interviewee: Paul Lombardo. The only photograph of Carrie Buck with her mother Emma, taken the day before she would stand trial before the collective onslaught of the American eugenics movement. (DNAi Location: Chronicle > Trial of Carrie Buck > Players > Fear in her eyes)

This photograph is the only existing picture of Carrie Buck and her mother Emma. It was taken the day before the famous trial, and shows Emma and Carrie united here for perhaps the first time since Carrie was a small child. If we look in Carrie's eyes we can see fear, perhaps fear from being examined by so many strangers, but also the knowledge that she was the person who had been chosen to test the new Virginia law.
