How many genes are in the human genome?, Ewan Birney

Interviewee: Ewan Birney. How many genes are in the human genome?

Yeah there was. In fact, in the meeting of May before this happened, I'm a betting kind of man and I'd set up a bet amongst a lot of scientists, still actually running at the moment, for how many genes there were in the human genome. And it's pretty whimsical, but scientists at this level do enjoy that kind of bet. So we've taken a lot of money actually on the bet, it's a sweepstake, and this time next year in 2003 we should adjudicate a winner of the bet. I hope it's me.
