Faulty research practices of the eugenists in a pedigree, James Watson

Interviewee: James Watson. James Watson examines a family pedigree in which many suffer from mental disorders. (DNAi Location: Chronicle >Threat of the Unfit > The fit and unfit > Pedigree of mental illness)

Here's a, a pedigree which gives several generations and it starts out with insanity on one side and there was a sibling to the insane person and it looked like normal on the other side. But you can see that a, among the large number of children there seemed to be fourteen, they were feebleminded, they were alcoholic, insane, and a number of them were what were called insane, one was called psychopathic. Then you go down to the next generation and it's less clear because there's some normals, but one is called alcoholic and by the time you get down to the fourth generation about all they can say is small children, as if this was in some way...So you can see, be the, was very inexact..

In general, eugenicists were lax in defining the criteria for measuring many of the "traits" they studied, and they were too quick to force their data to fit into simple Mendelian templates.
